Hi John,

You may have seen 35,000 people protesting in Dunedin last weekend. This sent a clear message to the Government that New Zealanders are outraged over their decision to stall the new Dunedin Hospital build.

This is yet another example of National making reckless cuts to our health system - and another broken promise from a government that has its priorities all wrong.

Not only are they downgrading Dunedin’s hospital build, they are throwing the people of Dunedin under the bus. They’re pitting them against other regions, like Northland and Nelson, saying if they were to fully fund Dunedin, others would miss out. It’s heartless and divisive.

They are insisting on stories of a cost blow out and mismanaged project to justify breaking their own promise to New Zealanders. But the Dunedin Hospital rebuild was a fully costed project, planned and funded under Labour. This is a manufactured crisis about the cost of rebuilding our hospitals and it speaks more to this Government’s priorities.

Dunedin Hospital is just the latest casualty of a government that has chosen not to fund the health system properly.

Our regions shouldn’t have to march in the streets to get adequate healthcare. Our regions shouldn’t have to compete for decent health services because of this Government’s bad choices.

National claim they don’t have the money for Dunedin Hospital, but they’ve spent $2.9 billion on a tax break for landlords, and $216 million subsidising tobacco companies.

This money could also help boost staffing in rural communities like Buller, keep after-hours clinics like Kenepuru open, help people access GP visits or keeping prescriptions free so people get the medication they need to stay well.

Write to National and let them know how this money could have been better spent in your community. <[link removed]> Together, we can tell the Government to stop taking New Zealand backwards.

Thanks,
The Labour team
