John,
This past week, a judge in Georgia overturned the state’s six-week abortion ban, allowing abortions past six weeks in pregnancy to resume. This landmark ruling is a major step towards restoring access not just to millions of people in Georgia, but across the southern states.
This ruling demonstrates exactly why we work so hard to elect pro-choice judges, DAs, and criminal legal officers: they are so often our first and last line of defense.
In his opinion, Judge Robert McBurney highlighted the absurdity of allowing government officials to dictate a patient’s intimate medical decisions.
Like many other judges at state and local levels around the country, Judge McBurney is an elected official.
After the overturning of Roe, Vote Pro-Choice launched our Care is not Criminal campaign, because we anticipated the importance of putting pro-choice leaders in criminal legal positions.
No matter the obstacles in our way, we’re not slowing down, and this Georgia ruling shows why: electing pro-choice leaders to every office is how we’ll win back our fundamental rights.
We don’t know how long the road ahead will be, but our strategy is strong, and our theory of change works. Thank you so much for your support in this work.
My best,
Sara Tabatabaie
