North Carolina

North Carolina is grappling with the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which has tragically resulted in the loss of over 200 lives across the state. This immense tragedy highlights the urgent need for assistance as communities face severe flooding and extensive damage to homes and infrastructure. For locals, this means they are unable to attend work or school, as the aftermath has left much uncertainty regarding the reopening of schools and the resumption of daily life.

In response to this crisis, President Biden has approved major disaster declarations for North Carolina, Florida, and South Carolina, allowing survivors to access emergency funds and resources to jumpstart their recovery immediately. FEMA and other federal agencies, along with private businesses and nonprofit and faith-based organizations, are mobilizing to respond to the disaster in at least seven states, from Florida to Virginia.

Residents are not only dealing with physical damage but also the emotional toll of the disaster. Many families have been displaced, and the loss of homes and livelihoods has created a deep sense of urgency for support. The community is rallying together, but the scale of the destruction requires significant federal assistance.

A preliminary study from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has indicated that climate change contributed to the hurricane's intensity, causing 50% more rainfall in some areas of Georgia and the Carolinas. This correlation emphasized the urgent need for climate action to combat the climate crisis as part of any recovery effort.

While Biden’s administration has prioritized immediate aid for affected states, the previous administration under Trump often downplayed the severity of such disasters. Hours before Helene made landfall, Trump dismissed the climate crisis and inaccurately claimed that nuclear "warming" was the greater concern. His administration's lack of adequate response to similar disasters left many vulnerable populations without the support they needed during critical times.

These critical times call for collective action from our community leaders and elected officials. The severity of the hurricane and its ongoing consequences are not to be taken likely, but as a devastating reminder that we need to fight against a very real climate crisis that continues to affect all Americans everywhere. Climate change is not a hoax, it’s time to DO SOMETHING before it’s too late.
