From 2014 to 2023, over 188,090 shootings happened within 500 yards of a school - that’s 57 a day. Last year alone, more than 6 million children attended a school with at least one shooting in its vicinity.
Gun violence isn’t just an issue inside our schools – it’s throughout our surrounding communities. And we must address it, John.
For teachers, these aren’t just numbers and headlines. It’s our colleagues’ and students’ lives. It’s personal. And it’s devastating proof that the violence in and around our schools isn’t slowing down.
As a teacher who survived the Sandy Hook shooting nearly 12 years ago, I understand the fear, powerlessness, and sadness that comes when a community is impacted by gun violence. That’s why we started Teachers Unify.
For far too long, teachers have been on the frontline of the crisis, but our voices have been ignored in the conversations on solutions. But we’ve been in these situations and we know what it will take to address it, so we’re leading the movement to change that.
