A Victory for Fair Maps
Utah voters scored a big win in the fight for fair voting maps when the Utah Supreme Court ruled in their favor last week. Holding that the people have the right to truthful ballot language and proper notice for proposed constitutional amendments, the court ruled unanimously that the proposed Constitutional Amendment D — a misleading, last-ditch effort by Utah’s Legislature to avoid accountability and fair maps — is void.
This ruling also upholds the will of Utah voters, who cast their ballots in 2018 for a measure to end partisan gerrymandering — the practice of a political party manipulating district lines to give members of their party an unfair advantage in elections — that requires the creation of an independent redistricting process that produces fair voting maps.
Every American deserves to vote under fair maps so they can choose their own politicians, not the other way around.
