Dear B,

Given the urgent needs across our state during this difficult time, I want to provide critical resources and updates to assist those affected by Hurricane Helene.

My heart aches to see the destruction Hurricane Helene has caused in our state. Please know that my thoughts are with the victims, our brave first responders, and everyone impacted by this unprecedented disaster.

Yesterday, Governor Cooper announced more than 1,000 National Guard personnel had been activated, 26 shelters had been opened in affected areas, and FEMA had been able to deliver around 2.5 million liters of water to North Carolinians in need.

To stay up to date on assistance being mobilized into affected areas, visit governor.nc.gov and monitor the Governor’s social media channels on X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram. Resources for those seeking to contact loved ones can also be found here.

Please also continue to check the North Carolina Department of Public Safety’s website for details on relief efforts, shelter locations, power outages, and other essential information.

Apply for Assistance

With President Biden’s approval of a Major Disaster Declaration for our state, North Carolinians in designated disaster areas can now apply for FEMA assistance.

The quickest way to apply is by visiting DisasterAssistance.gov. You can also apply via the FEMA mobile app or by calling the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362.

To sign up for the NC Department of Public Safety’s Individual Assistance Program, which offers aid to homeowners and renters affected by damaged or destroyed residences, visit Ncdps.gov/Helene or Disasterassistance.gov.

Constituent Resources

As a result of Hurricane Helene, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has extended the deadline for taxpayers across the state until May 1, 2025, to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments. For more information, visit here

For the latest information on appointments at Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers in affected areas, visit here.

Constituent service representatives in my office are available as a valuable resource for information and can assist in ensuring individuals receive timely responses from federal agencies, including FEMA. For contact information for my Greensboro office, visit https://manning.house.gov

My office will maintain regular communication with FEMA, North Carolina Emergency Management, and other relevant agencies. We will keep providing updates as the response and recovery efforts progress.

Sincerely,
