John -
Last week marked a major moment in the climate world. As the UN General Assembly gathered during New York Climate Week, activists (including 350.org staff and supporters like you) turned out to demand they commit to ambitious goals to phase out fossil fuels and provide equitable support to communities on the frontlines of the climate crisis.
Now comes the next step — and we need to keep the pressure up before the biggest negotiations get underway this fall.
In just one week, delegates from 40 countries around the world will gather in Baku, Azerbaijan, ahead of the UN’s COP29 climate talks. This meeting will set the tone for COP29 — and delegates need to hear from you.
John, will you send a letter to key delegates, asking them to push for climate justice at Baku and beyond? When enough people raise their voices, leaders are compelled to listen and act.
These world leaders will be discussing a crucial topic: climate finance. “Climate finance” refers to securing money from rich countries to help poor countries transition away from fossil fuels.
But some rich countries — including the U.S. — are trying to get away with paying less than what’s needed. So we need delegates from supportive regions to champion climate finance and bring the others along.
Representatives from the UK, Germany and EU are already receptive to strong climate finance and are more responsive to public pressure. They could be pivotal in driving a fair and open conversation about climate finance and pushing other leaders, including in the U.S., to commit to stronger targets.
Climate finance is about more than just getting money from one government to another. It’s about the people and communities that can thrive if richer governments stop funding fossil fuels and pay for a fair transition to renewable energy.
Those on the frontlines have done the least to cause the climate crisis, but are left to deal with the worst impacts while rich countries profit. It’s time for rich countries, including the U.S., to stop stalling and pay what we owe.
If we get this right, we can help make incredible projects happen that transform communities and safeguard all our futures.
Onward,
Team 350
