Hi Friend,
Last night was the Vice Presidential Debate between Governor Tim Walz and
Senator JD Vance.
Much of it was what you would expect. Tim Walz spoke about how he and
Kamala Harris will work to restore reproductive rights, lower costs for
hardworking families, invest in the middle class with good-paying jobs,
and combat climate change. Meanwhile, JD Vance explained the MAGA vision
for America, one where we cut taxes for the rich, restrict abortion
rights, and reverse the investments in green energy across the country.
But above all, there’s one moment I’m thinking about following the debate.
During a section about the January 6 insurrection, Tim Walz asked JD Vance
a simple question. “Did [Donald Trump] lose the 2020 election?”
Vance wouldn’t answer.
It’s a deeply troubling moment to me, and an example of why Donald Trump
is an existential threat to our democracy. State and local elections
officials and experts agree that there was no evidence of widespread fraud
in the last election. Trump lost all but one of his 60+ court cases
challenging the results. But Trump and his followers are still spreading
this lie.
A peaceful transfer of power is essential to our democracy, but Trump
instigated the insurrection. If he’s elected president again, what other
pillars of our democracy will he try to topple? Will he disregard the will
of voters and the folks they elected to represent them?
If Donald Trump doesn’t respect your vote, he doesn’t deserve it.
We have just over a month until Election Day. Make sure you’re registered
to vote. Make sure your friends and family are registered to vote.
Volunteer. Donate. Do whatever you can to elect Kamala Harris and Tim
Walz.Our democracy depends on it.
Thanks,
Peter
