At this week’s vice presidential debate, JD Vance tried to claim that he “never supported a national ban” — a lie that follows several similar lies from Donald Trump himself.
But we all know better. Trump and Vance have made clear in the past that they want to ban abortion — they’re lying about their plans because they know the American people disagree with them. Just like the right-wing Supreme Court justices lied about their respect for Roe v. Wade as “settled law” during their confirmation hearings.
For Trump and his anti-abortion allies, Dobbs was just the beginning. Banning abortion nationwide has always been their goal, and they clearly see Comstock as their fastest path to get there. As right-wing extremist and Trump lawyer Jonathan Mitchell has said: “We don’t need a federal ban when we have Comstock on the books.”
Trump’s and Vance’s picks for a future administration are eager to weaponize the Comstock Act ASAP. Will you add your name here to urge Congress to stop Comstock to ensure they don’t have the chance?
The far-right couldn’t be clearer about its intentions to weaponize Comstock.
In March, as the Supreme Court considered a case that threatened the Food and Drug Administration’s two-decade-long approval of the safe, effective, and widely-used abortion drug mifepristone, 145 Republican members of Congress signed onto a brief asking the court to cite the Comstock Act in order to deny people access to it.
And the threat doesn’t stop with abortion. Republicans could misapply Comstock to go after everything from birth control to clean needle exchange and HIV prevention technologies and to gender-affirming care.
To stop these anti-abortion extremists, we need to stop Comstock. Sign your name to urge our elected leaders to repeal the Comstock Act.
With Election Day fast approaching, there’s no time to waste. We’re so grateful for your support in this urgent fight.
