Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) serve some of our nation’s brightest minds, graduating 25 percent of African Americans with degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). 

These graduates are the next generation of tech entrepreneurs and visionaries who will take the digital economy to new heights. Yet American companies are still unrepresentative of Black talent. And the average endowment for HBCUs lags behind that of other top colleges.

The private sector can do more by strengthening its partnerships with HBCUs, recruiting, promoting, and retaining the impressive minds emerging from these venerable institutions.

That’s why I partnered with Dr. Jennifer Clyburn Reed to host the Silicon Valley HBCU Tech Summit at Claflin University. This valuable event brought together leaders from HBCUs, the Divine 9 Greek Houses, and leading Silicon Valley tech companies including Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Nvidia to discuss providing scholarships, jobs, and financial support to HBCU students and partnering with the universities.

However, Congress must also do its part by increasing funding for HBCUs. By providing greater opportunities for HBCU graduates to pursue careers in STEM, we open new doors to wealth generation in the digital age and strengthen our economy.
