This parliament is our best opportunity yet to get a fair electoral system and we can’t afford to miss it. We can’t go back to what we’ve seen over the past decade.
Here’s why Proportional Representation (PR) is so important:
* It’s the fairest form of voting. Every vote is counted equally, putting voters in the driver’s seat, not vested interests and party elites.
* Every voice will be heard. This means that important issues like climate change, the cost-of-living crisis and our NHS will be prioritised, in line with what the people want.
* It will bring our democracy into the modern age. Most countries have abandoned First Past The Post (FPTP), with 111 countries opting for PR.
* It will keep the extremes in check, keeping the likes of Nigel Farage out of Downing Street.
There is plenty to be upbeat about. The Labour membership’s support for PR is as strong as ever (as is that of the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party). Following July’s election, there are now more MPs than ever supporting PR. Increasingly, we’re getting a positive response when lobbying behind the scenes in Parliament to build support for reform. And we have just launched an exciting new All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Fair Elections to drive cross-party support for democratic reform across both houses (and to link with our public campaigning).
But I’m realistic. It looks like we have an uphill battle on our hands, one we’re not going to win overnight.
