Defending Clean Water at the Supreme Court

Leave it to the Trump administration to argue that it’s OK to dump treated sewage into the ocean as long as it moves through the local groundwater first. The Maui Group of the Sierra Club's Hawai‘i Chapter disagreed, and they helped take the fight all the way to the US Supreme Court. To lose the case would mean seriously weakening the Clean Water Act.

Here’s how a six-justice majority ruled.

Making Space for People

Spending time outdoors is necessary for physical and mental health, but so is keeping our distance. Because many communities lack parks and open spaces where people can safely get outdoors, a growing movement is calling for more streets in more cities to open for people to safely recreate during the pandemic.

Learn more and ask your mayor to open the streets.

Here’s How You Can Support Workers During This Pandemic

May Day, when we celebrate the labor movement and workers’ invaluable contributions to our society, has special resonance this year. The Last Thing We Need Right Now

With the tar sands industry on life support and companies shutting down production, it’s clearer than ever that we shouldn’t allow toxic tar sands pipelines to be built through our communities. Yet new projects continue to move forward despite massive public opposition and economics that simply don’t add up.

It's time to stop KXL and other zombie pipeline projects.

Protecting the Spirituality of Honokowai

Hawai‘i's seemingly boundless forests and unending blue ocean tell a story of both abundance and environmental decline. The introduction of non-native plants and animals, a history of resource misuse, and ongoing land development have tested Hawai‘i's ecological resilience. But conservation and community remain strong. Few people embody these values like Puanani Lindsey, whose relationship with nature, culture, and family tells the story of a very special place at risk and why there is still hope.

Discover Puanani’s story.

Black Bus Drivers at Risk

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed many egregious flaws in US society—perhaps most glaringly, the enormous health disparity between black and white Americans. Data from Michigan reveals that while African Americans make up 15 percent of the population, they account for 40 percent of COVID-19 deaths in the state. Black Americans make up nearly 30 percent of bus drivers and essential workers (including food service workers, postal service workers, custodians, and delivery personnel) and over 30 percent of nurses and health aides.

This puts them, their families, and the elderly they work with at higher risk for COVID-19 exposure.

Push Back on Plastic Fearmongering

Guess who decided that reusable bags are unsafe during a pandemic? The people who make plastic bags, that’s who. Turns out the plastic industry has been spreading misinformation to protect its profits. And now they want the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to play along.

Tell HHS to rely on science, not plastic propaganda, when making public health recommendations.

Ditch the Denier at JP Morgan Chase

JPMorgan Chase is by far the world’s biggest funder of fossil fuels. One key reason: For more than three decades, JPMorgan Chase has had climate denier Lee Raymond, the former CEO of ExxonMobil, on its board of directors. But those days need to end. JP Morgan’s largest shareholders need to vote Raymond out and hold JPMorgan Chase accountable for its contributions to planetary destruction.

Tell JPMorgan Chase's biggest shareholders to ditch the climate denier for good.
