Dear John,

Through the end of the year, we will share the story of Raha, a fictional girl whose experiences represent the lived realities of girls worldwide. Through Raha’s story, we hope to illustrate our impact and highlight our ongoing work and the path we see ahead.

Already, Raha has experienced the brute end of male favoritism, witnessing her brothers and male peers receive opportunities to flourish while she struggles to safely stay in school. Like many girls her age, Raha risks sexual coercion and sexual assault from male teachers or those providing transportation for her to and from school.

With these violations, recent rollbacks of women’s rights, and the rise of the anti-gender and anti-rights movements, it may feel like there are many reasons to despair. However, there are also many reasons to look to the future with hope.

Equality Now is working tirelessly alongside our local and international partners to build a world in which women and men have equal rights under the law. Over the years, we’ve helped girls like Raha stay in school through our Let Girls Learn initiative in Africa, which led to Sierra Leone lifting a discriminatory ban on ‘visibly’ pregnant girls attending school.

We know that together we can make a difference. In 2023 alone, we helped change 14 laws in 12 countries,  improving access to justice for 39.2 million women and girls worldwide – none of which would have been possible without your support.

Together through the law, we can ensure that the human rights violations that impact women and girls today, don’t also affect future generations; we can protect the rights that our mothers and grandmothers so furiously fought for; and we can build a world that we’re proud of.

Stay tuned for the next installment of Raha’s story next week. If you miss an update on our fictional girl this fall and winter, you can find the most recent updates on our website.

From all of us at Equality Now, thank you for continuing to support this important cause. We look forward to continuing on this journey with you.
With hope and gratitude,
