The 2023 FBI hate crime data confirmed the worst: hate crimes are on the rise, with the highest number of incidents impacting Black and Latinx communities, along with significant increases targeting Jewish and Muslim communities. Despite the severe underreporting of hate crimes by law enforcement agencies across the country, this news still paints a dark picture of what our country can look like if we don’t take adequate steps right now to address the hate crime epidemic. SPLC has designated October as Hate Crimes Awareness Month because for far too long, hate has plagued our country, eroding our democracy and violently targeting people of color, women, immigrants, LGBTQ+ communities, Jewish and Muslim Americans, and Indigenous communities.
