Dear John,
I wish I could tell you that every child will go to sleep with a full belly tonight. But that’s simply not the case.
Even before the coronavirus, hunger existed across the country and school meals were a crucial lifeline for kids.
"I’ll never forget a young girl telling me what it felt like to go to bed hungry. To go to bed so she could forget about the hunger pains in her stomach," said Jeri Baker, leader of a nonprofit that supports the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. This type of hunger was prevalent in this community and across the country even before the coronavirus crisis.
