Recently, the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP) released a stunning report: the number of women running for Congress in 2024 is far less than it has been in previous election cycles (facts and figures below).

Let’s look at the numbers:

In 2020, 298 women ran for the U.S. House of Representatives. This year, that number dropped to 256. Women only make up 23% of all candidates and nominees in election 2024, Republican women are an even smaller percentage of their party’s candidates – making up a mere 15.7% of House nominees.

Dangerous laws about women’s bodies are being crafted by rooms full of men across the country. We desperately need more women in those rooms.

As the report points out, while the number of women running for office is down, the forecast for female representation in the House and Senate will depend on what happens this November.
