Friend,
Last night I watched the debate from St. Paul with educators from across Minnesota. It was incredible watching Gov. Tim Walz, a Minnesota teacher and former AFT and Education Minnesota member, debate while I was surrounded by his colleagues.
Walz won last night’s debate against JD Vance by doing what good teachers do: On every question he was asked, he offered practical solutions for a better future.
On the other hand, if you cannot say Joe Biden won the election in 2020, if you cannot condemn the Jan. 6 insurrection, if you pretend there was a peaceful transfer of power, you are disqualified from being vice president. Vance failed that test yesterday.
We want to make sure everyone sees the stark difference between Walz and Vance. The Harris-Walz campaign put out a short video of debate highlights. Can you share it on social media today, to highlight why we need to elect Kamala Harris and Tim Walz?
Vance thought he could lie his way through the debate, but post-debate polls show he’s less popular now and Walz has even higher support. It all goes back to what we’ve been saying—the more the American public hears from Harris and Walz, the more they connect with their forward-looking platform of optimism and real solutions rather than the tired divisiveness Trump champions.
Walz’s basic humanity and decency showed through last night. We couldn’t be prouder of Walz, who shares our values and our commitment to the American dream. Like Harris, Walz knows that the path for Americans to get ahead, not just get by, is through educational and economic opportunity. And according to CNN, Walz’s favorability shot up 23 percent after the debate. When people saw him on that stage, they knew that they could trust him.
Today teachers are standing up a little bit straighter after watching Walz stand up for democracy and American values.
In unity,
Randi Weingarten
AFT President
