John,
After last night’s debate, we’re worried about JD Vance’s attempt to rewrite the Trump/Vance stance on abortion rights as somehow being “moderate.”
We’ve seen this play before. During Virginia’s election last year, Governor Youngkin spent huge dollars on ads claiming that Virginia Republicans were moderate – not embracing bans, but rather “minimum standards,” which are exactly the same thing.
What’s scary is that our polling showed that when voters were exposed to these lies, they worked. They moved votes toward Republicans. The only thing that brought votes back was hearing counter messaging from trusted voices who could effectively communicate our vision for reproductive freedom and who could call out the lies.
Today, we face the same obstacle. This phony shift on abortion rights from Trump and Vance will cause damage if key voters don’t also hear from trusted pro-choice organizations.
In last year’s Virginia election, battleground likely voters across party affiliations trusted Democratic candidates on the issue of abortion by a net +7-points. However, they trusted Planned Parenthood Virginia by a net +17-points and Vote Pro-Choice by a net +19-points.
It’s not enough for voters to only hear from the campaign. They need to hear from validating groups as well.
So many of you have already given so much, and we are extremely proud of the priority state programs we’re able to run because of your support. Thank you for making this critical work possible.
If you have any room left in your budget, I hope you will consider contributing to our work to reach voters on what could be the winning issue for Democrats.
Thank you so much for your consideration.
Warmly,
Sara Tabatabaie
