Take a look at these headlines, John:
Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida as a category 4 storm and went on to devastate communities across five different states. Not only did it destroy coastal towns, but as The Guardian reports, “it mangled places in multiple states that have never seen such impacts, obliterating small towns, hurling trees onto homes, unmooring houses that then floated in the floodwater, plunging millions of people into power blackouts and turning major roads into rivers.”
More than 160 people have died with hundreds more missing and tens of thousands still without power. Nealy one-third of deaths took place in the North Carolina county containing the city of Asheville, a place previously considered a ‘haven’ from climate change’s negative effects.
It’s clear: climate change is here, and nobody is safe from its impacts. Scientists have confirmed that human-induced climate change made this historic hurricane possible, and it’s only the beginning if we fail to take urgent, drastic measures to prevent and mitigate the climate crisis.
Now more than ever, we need the Green New Deal: bold, comprehensive legislation to transition the United States to 100% renewable energy, invest in electric vehicles and public transit, upgrade buildings and infrastructure, and create millions of good-paying jobs.
Every Justice Democrats member of Congress backs the Green New Deal, but we need to keep the pressure up on the rest of our elected officials to take action before it’s truly too late. Add your name to reaffirm your support for the Green New Deal now →
