Hey John,

You know that every politician needs a watchdog and you can make sure there’s one there for some folks who could use a hand.

Here’s the problem: Indigenous Canadians don’t have an auditor general to investigate issues in their communities.

An auditor general for First Nations communities is that watchdog, it’s extremely important for accountability.

The federal auditor general raised the alarm about tens of millions of taxpayers’ dollars being wasted in Ottawa’s green slush fund and caught over $4.6 billion in CERB overpayments.

But unlike the feds, Indigenous Canadians don’t have an auditor general to call.

Many First Nations are doing well, but there are others with serious questions about accountability. And right now, there is no one to investigate.

An auditor general for First Nations communities would mean there is someone to call when activists have questions about how their community’s money is being spent.

And it’s something that both the Assembly of First Nations and the Government of Canada know is needed. In 2017, they commissioned a report that says: “A First Nations Auditor General would provide many benefits, both today and in the future.”

My friend Hans McCarthy is an Indigenous activist fighting for transparency at Frog Lake First Nation and he puts it best: “We need someone to investigate these issues because right now everything is a mess.”

You already know that an auditor general for First Nations communities is important, but politicians will only make it happen if they’re pushed.

Will you sign the petition to call on the federal government to establish an auditor general for First Nations communities?

Every federal and provincial government has an independent auditor general to hold politicians accountable.

But there is no auditor general to ensure there’s accountability in First Nations communities.

The Assembly of First Nations and Government of Canada commissioned a report recommending an auditor general for First Nations communities, but it hasn’t been done yet.

We, the undersigned, call for the establishment of an auditor general for First Nations communities.

Thanks for standing with my friend Hans and many other Indigenous activists fighting for accountability.

Thanks for standing up and fighting for taxpayers – It’s making a difference!
