Dear Friends,
As Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown tonight, I know for many of us our hearts feel heavy as antisemitism continues to permeate throughout society and the State of Israel remains under attack. But we need to remember that even in the darkness, there are bright lights shining through. We must remember that behind each antisemitic incident is a real person who is impacted. An entire community is impacted. Remember that our impact on each other can be greater than what we intended to do. Hate is hate and there should be no place for hate. Leaning into our Jewishness in whatever that means to you is vital today. Sometimes we need to be reminded of the beauty of our communities.
When I look around and see what’s happening in world, but more importantly right here at home in our own communities, I remember that the Jewish people have faced a lot of struggles throughout history. There are times we thought we’d never be free. We all know that not only have we survived, but we as a people have also thrived.
As we approach year 5785, remember to lift yourself up every day, remember to lift others up every day, remember that even though antisemitism and hate is showing up here at home, we can do something about it. We must reaffirm our commitment to justice and fair treatment for all. We can be part of the solution.
As we begin the New Year, ADL Washington, D.C. shares our hope for a year filled with meaningful actions, bridges of understanding, courageous conversations, and lasting peace. Chazak, Chazak, v’Nitchazek – be strong, hold fast, and let us strengthen one another. Wishing you all a Shana Tova U’Metuka – A Good and Sweet New Year!
