Dear Friend,

Renters and homeowners know cancelling rent and mortgage payments is the only way to prevent the housing crisis from reaching catastrophic levels. Meanwhile, our Governor has been silent on housing relief. The current statewide rent moratorium only delays the inevitable collection of rent from out-of-work families who were already barely making rent each month.

But there’s a new opportunity to win rent/mortgage cancellation nationwide to make sure renters and homeowners don't get stuck with an unpayable bill: the Rent and Mortgage Cancellation Act of 2020, introduced by Rep. Ilhan Omar this past April 17th.

PLEASE CALL YOUR REP ABOUT H.R. 6515 <[link removed]>

The Rent and Mortgage Cancellation Act (H.R. 6515) includes:

- suspension of rent and mortgage payments, nationwide

- zero accumulation of debt for renters or homeowners

- zero negative impact on credit ratings or rental histories

Rent was due last week, but only 24 <[link removed]> members of the California delegation <[link removed]> to the US House have taken a stand by cosponsoring the bill. That’s why we’re joining with our partners at People’s Action and Housing Now! on a statewide phone zap to call our California Representatives today.

Will you join me by calling your Representative and asking them to co-sponsor H.R. 6515, and ensure it’s in the next stimulus package?

This click-to-call tool makes it simple and easy:

If Congress fails to provide relief to renters and homeowners, we will continue working with our partners to escalate our campaign to prevent this impending catastrophe. Thank you for reminding Congress that the clock is ticking. Let's keep families in their homes!

Thank you!

- Cancel Rent: Even before the pandemic, three in five renters could not come up with $400 in an emergency. How are they supposed to get by now? <[link removed]>(The Atlantic, 5/2/20) <[link removed]> <[link removed]>
