As you know, China’s authoritarian government keeps secrets and hides the truth about their oppression of the Tibetan people. It’s this same secrecy and censorship that tragically hid the extent of the COVID-19 crisis and contributed to its spread across the world, disrupting all of our lives on a global scale.

Our thoughts, as ever, are with the people of Tibet during this challenging time. We need to open access to the Land of Snows so China can’t hide the truth about their human rights violations any longer. We must demand reciprocal access: just as China’s citizens have free access to the United States, US citizens—including Tibetan-American refugees, who are particularly discriminated against—must have free access to Tibet.

Dear John,

Today is #GivingTuesdayNow, a global day of unity for people around the world to come together in the face of the COVID-19 crisis.

Your compassionate action is urgently needed, John—especially by the people of Tibet.

Censorship and lack of transparency are hallmarks of China’s authoritarian rule. And as we’ve been reminded during this global pandemic, China’s lies cause problems for the whole world. No one knows this more than the Tibetan people who have endured a now six-decade-long occupation of Tibet.

With the support of ICT members, our community of compassion has been fighting to expose China’s lies, pushing for independent investigations on human rights abuses in the Land of Snows. But access to Tibet has been heavily restricted for a very long time and in the midst of this global lockdown, the ability to know what’s really happening in Tibet is more critical than ever.

We need to expose the truth about China’s oppression against Tibetans and stop their secrets in Tibet. As long as China’s authoritarianism, censorship and propaganda continue—hurting Tibet and the entire world—we can’t let them go unopposed.

The Reciprocal Access to Tibet Act—passed through the US Congress in late 2018 with the support of ICT members—puts pressure on China to open Tibet and allow access to the world outside its borders. The Act requires the State Department to produce a report that targets the Chinese officials responsible for restricting access to Tibet for American citizens, and in turn revokes their own access to the United States. But the State Department has yet to release the report.

We need your help, John, to turn up the pressure on China. Sign our petition to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo calling on the State Department to release the report on Chinese officials and help bring reciprocal access to Tibet this #GivingTuesdayNow.

Show China’s leaders that their discrimination and oppression in Tibet won’t be tolerated—and neither will their secrets. Thank you for signing our petition and standing with the people of Tibet.
