John, We’re excited to keep our new Take-out Tuesday tradition going in May as J.D. continues to support local restaurants right here in Iowa’s 4th district! We hope we’ve inspired you to do the same. Right now, small businesses need all the help that they can get -- and it’s always a treat to kick back with some of your favorite foods. Whether it’s coffee and a donut to start off the workday or a hot meal to enjoy after a long day, if you can, we hope you will join J.D. in participating in Takeout Tuesday. And to support local restaurant workers who are facing layoffs or reduced hours right now, you can chip in to the Iowa Restaurant Employee Relief Fund here. Here are a few highlights from J.D.’s Takeout Tuesday adventures so far: Last month J.D. couldn’t resist grabbing a slice (or a whole pie) at Sioux City’s famous Jerry’s Pizza! To demonstrate his love for a staple that’s been around in the district since 1959 -- and his willingness to reach across the aisle to work with both plain cheese AND pepperoni pizza lovers -- J.D. went half-and-half on his pizza. Spicy food and this midwesterner do not mix well… J.D. has made it clear that anything spicier than ketchup will physically make him sweat, so when he stopped by Shahi Palace a few weeks ago, he asked for his food to be EXTRA mild. J.D. was ecstatic to learn that Milwaukee Wiener House in Sioux City was still offering takeout during the pandemic. He would not be where he is today without Mike and John making him chili dogs since high school! Finally, J.D. went full-bookworm when he saw this Ernest Hemingway-themed growler while stopping for Brioux City beer-to-go at Marty’s Tap. Though it’s not food, J.D. understands local brewers need our help to stay on their feet as much as restaurants do! Everything tastes better when it’s local. J.D. can’t wait to help support more local restaurants. Follow along on J.D.’s Twitter (@JDScholten) to see where he goes next, and share your own takeout experiences with him by including #TakeoutTuesday in your posts! And if you can, chip in to the Iowa Restaurant Employee Relief Fund here >> Keep calm and eat on. - Team Scholten |
