John, these past few years have made it abundantly clear: there is no freedom without reproductive freedom. And there is no freedom without true bodily autonomy. Relentless attacks on these freedoms threaten every aspect of reproductive health, from abortion to birth control to IVF access. They threaten gender-affirming care and LGBTQ+ people’s ability to live safe, empowered lives. It’s long past time for these rights to be protected and for the regressive laws we’re seeing across the country to be rolled back. Just this month, we saw the tragic, real-world effects of these laws. Two women in Georgia, which is home to a six-week abortion ban, died after being unable to access legal abortions and timely medical care. Amber Thurman and Candi Miller deserved better. Their deaths are a reminder that these laws aren’t just dangerous – they’re deadly. People who support reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy hold immense political influence. We exist in every state and county across the country. And when we unite, when we harness our collective power, we have the capacity to create real, enduring change. If you’ve ever spent time with me, you know that one of my favorite things to say is that everyone doesn’t have to do everything, but everyone has to do one thing. Today, that one thing is to double check your voter registration status. Address changes, unclear requirements, and in some cases voter suppression efforts can roll previously registered voters off the active roster, resulting in voters finding themselves unregistered on Election Day. Registration deadlines are approaching in many states, so now is the perfect time to check your registration. This election, advancing democracy will take each and every one of us. Stay tuned throughout the month as we lift up what it will require to achieve a democracy that works for all. In solidarity, |
