What's a Brain?
We all have one: three pounds of winkled grey-pink peering out at the world from behind castle walls of bone. It’s the seat of consciousness and dreams. It holds memories, harbors love, shocks with fear, awe, and pain; it works over the raw input of the senses, smoothing the chemical signals, wavelengths of light, vibrations and electrical messages it receives into a cogent picture of its realm.
Yep, that’s a brain—mine and yours, the same brain that brought us language and agriculture, that threw the first spear. The same an unnamed scribe first etched into papyrus some 3,500 years ago (searching for the right hieroglyph, he chose “skull-marrow,” something to scoop out when the time comes for mummification, favoring that glorified muscle, the heart, for transport into the realms of the Dead).

WorkIs the World Really Running Out of Sand? Practical EngineeringIf you have to know the answer right away, it’s no; or at least, my goal with this video is to convince you that the world is not running out of sand. But if it were that simple, I wouldn’t be here (right?) and you probably wouldn’t be either. In fact, I was really surprised by some of the things I didn’t know as I dug deeper into the topic further, and how some of the most widely spread sand “facts” are dead wrong. WorkThe Hidden World of Electrostatic Ecology | Quanta MagazineImagine, for a moment, that you’re a honeybee. In many ways, your world is small. Your four delicate wings, each less than a centimeter long, transport your half-gram body through looming landscapes full of giant animals and plants. In other ways, your world is expansive, even grand. Your five eyes see colors and patterns that humans can’t, and your multisensory antennae detect odors from distant flowers.
WorkWorkCivility and Then a Clash Over Jan. 6: Seven Takeaways From the DebateMr. Vance dodged and pivoted. He argued that the Democrats were the real threat to democracy and claimed that Ms. Harris censored Americans, citing old Facebook policies. He had no answer to the question itself. The exchange showed both the limits and requirements of serving as Mr. Trump’s running mate. “That’s why Mike Pence isn’t on this stage,” Mr. Walz said.
WorkOlivia Nuzzi, Reporter Linked to R.F.K. Jr., Accuses Ex-Fianc of HarassmentMr. Lizza said the allegations against him were not true. “I am saddened that my ex-fiancée would resort to making a series of false accusations against me as a way to divert attention from her own personal and professional failings,” he said. “I emphatically deny these allegations, and I will defend myself against them vigorously and successfully.” WorkChina Rally Spurs $7 Billion Loss for Shorts of US-Listed Stocks“BABA’s stock price might see the greatest impact if shorts begin covering in size as the stock has seen increased short selling into this rally,” Dusaniwsky said. “With short selling no longer offsetting some of the long buying pressure in the stock, buy-to-covers side-by-side with long buying may steepen the trajectory if its price moves.”
WorkThe best iPad cases for 2024How often you charge your iPad will depend on how often you use it. Most iPads will last at least a regular work day with frequent usage, which is one of the reasons why many have opted to use their iPads as laptop replacements. But with heavy usage, like constant video streaming or gaming, will come more rapid battery drain. A good rule of thumb is to charge your iPad when you go to sleep each night, that way you’ll have a topped-up device waiting for you in the morning. WorkNikes sales are in a funk. Its working off a Jordan hangover. - WSJ A year ago, Nike Chief Executive John Donahoe celebrated growing the sneaker giant’s Air Force 1, Air Jordan 1 and Dunk into the three largest multibillion–dollar footwear franchises in industry history. Sales of the models were strong and paved the way for the sneaker giant to report $51 billion in sales.
WorkJ. D. Vance Got the Conversation He Wanted at the Vice-Presidential Debate - The New Yorker Vice-Presidential debates are normally for the archives: the transcript gets recorded and then filed away. Strain your memory and try to recall: Who won the debate between John Edwards and Dick Cheney? Biden-Ryan? Even Harris-Pence, just four years ago? In the rush of the Presidential race, these events were simply speed bumps. The best way to approach Tuesday nights version was with a certain measure of historically earned skepticism. Was there any reason to think that this Vice-Presidential debate would actually matterwould even be rememberedby Election Day, now a little more than a month away, when so few have in the past? Work
WorkThe other British invasion: how UK lingo conquered the USI am an American, New York-born, but I started to spend time in London in the 1990s, teaching classes to international students. Being interested in language, and reading a lot of newspapers there – one of the courses I taught was on the British press – I naturally started picking up on the many previously unfamiliar (to me) British words and expressions, and differences between British and American terminology. WorkVance Strains to Sell a Softer TrumpAnd as for Mr. Trump’s refusal to accept the results of the 2020 election and his role in the violent and deadly siege on the Capitol on Jan. 6? Well, said Mr. Vance, Mr. Trump “peacefully gave over power” on Inauguration Day two weeks later.
WorkWorkOpinion | This Is Why MAGA Loves JD VanceWe know exactly how that turned out. Pence had no positive effect on Trump. None of Trump’s best advisers could change that man. The most they could do was throw their bodies in front of bad policy or outright criminality, at least until they resigned or were fired. Even Pence, the most loyal of the decent men around Trump, couldn’t shake him from his determination to try to steal an American election. So Pence, too, is gone — wandering in the political wilderness with the few remaining conservative dissidents.
Work3 Traps on the Way to Becoming a Customer-Centric Company - Harvard Business Review Researchers analyzed data from more than 1,000 customer-centricity transformation projects over the past 25 years. They found that only 15% of CEOs and sales teams have a customer-centric strategy. Most run their company or customer relationships based on a product-focused mindset, which puts the onus on finding a market to sell ones products to, rather than orchestrating growth together with customers. Instead, firms should ask three key questions to ensure customer centricity: Are our strategic objectives and transformation efforts aligned with our customers priorities? Are our solutions-design and deployment efforts configured based on customer-validated input? And, are our organizational setup and investments allocated to customer commitments for mutual success? WorkAt a Wisconsin Watch Party, the Debate Leaves Some Students UninspiredStudents were given a handout guiding them on ways to analyze the debate and a bingo card filled with phrases to cross out as the debate went on (among them: “fentanyl,” “tax cut” and “American people”). A television showing live fact-checking from the PolitiFact website was set up next to the debate screen. WorkWorkWorkWorkWorkHow to Build A Virtual Cell With Artificial Intelligence - Discover Magazine The cell is a biochemical factory of immense complexity. As fundamental units of life, cells harvest energy from the environment and use it to synthesize complex molecular machinery, to build replicas of themselves and to move. This is a 4-billion-year-old trick that even today mystifies biologists who struggle to understand the processes and principles at work. WorkWorkWorkA Tense, Policy-Heavy Debate Ends With Clash Over DemocracyMr. Vance had his work cut out for him, too, during the 107-minute debate broadcast from New York. He made a number of misleading or factually incorrect claims, falsely saying that “illegal aliens” were a significant factor in driving up home prices and distorting Mr. Trump’s tax cut as primarily benefiting the middle class when upper-income Americans saw the largest boon. WorkWorkWorkWhy we avoid effort even though it can improve our well-being - New Scientist As someone whose running shoes rarely leave the closet, I am both in awe of, and perplexed by, my endurance athlete friends. Particularly hard to grasp is that their love of running marathons or cycling up mountains isnt in spite of those efforts being so gruelling. They enjoy them precisely for that reason. WorkSiete Family Foods to Sell to PepsiCo for $1.2 Billion - Inc Its a big day for Siete Family Foods. PepsiCo has agreed to acquire the Austin-based packaged food company for $1.2 billion.Launched in 2014 by seven (siete) members of the Garza family, Siete initially sold almond-flour tortillas to local health food stores, using a recipe developed by Vernoica Garza, the companys president and chief innovation officer and a 2023 Inc. Female Founders honoree. Over the years, the product line expanded to healthier versions of Mexican American staples such as tortilla chips, canned beans, sauces, and cookies. WorkWorkWorkHealth care policy features prominently in Vance-Walz VP debateMental health emerged from a question about gun control policy. “We have a mental health crisis in this country that I really think we need to get to the root causes of,” Vance said, saying it was a “big piece” of the gun violence, and also said gun crime is worse in cities. Walz said that in his state, death by suicide with firearms is more common in rural areas. He also cautioned against stigmatizing mental health. WorkWorkWorkWorkThe only moment from the VP debate that matteredThe US presidential campaign is in its final weeks and were dedicated to helping you understand the stakes. In this election cycle, its more important than ever to provide context beyond the headlines. But in-depth reporting is costly, so to continue this vital work, we have an ambitious goal to add 5,000 new members. WorkHere's Where U.S. Forces Are Deployed in the Middle EastKuwait, southeast of Iraq on the Persian Gulf, had about 13,500 U.S. troops on bases as of 2021. At the time, only Germany, Japan and South Korea had more U.S. forces. Kuwait was a hub for American forces during the Iraq war. WorkWorkA One-in-10-Billion Particle Decay Hints at Hidden Physics - Scientific American Once in a very great while, an ephemeral particle called a kaon arises and then quickly decays away into three other obscure entities. Whether or not this happens in a particular way has very little bearing on most of us, who will go about our lives without knowing either way. But to physicists who have been searching for this arcane process for decades, it matters a lot; finding out how often it happens could reveal hidden aspects of our universe. WorkWorkWorkStocks Steady in Nervy Wait for Israel Response: Markets WrapSeparately, Republican JD Vance largely succeeded in sanding down his hardline reputation, while Democrat Tim Walz’s nerves were on display as the vice presidential candidates battled over immigration, abortion, and climate change during Tuesday’s debate.
