Dear Friends,

Last week I voted for, and Congress passed, a temporary government funding bill to protect New Mexicans from a disastrous government shutdown.

While the bill is far from perfect, it delivers real wins for our state.

Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Filing Deadline Extension

Image

The New Mexico Congressional delegation and I fought to include parts of my Hermit’s Peak Claims Extension Act in this funding bill. My bill would extend important deadlines for victims to file claims as they recover from the Hermit's Peak/Calf Canyon Fire.

Thanks to our work, families affected now have until December 20, 2024 to file a notice of loss with the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Claims Office. A notice of loss is an important first step to getting compensated for losses from the fires and floods and can be amended. If you were affected by the fires or its cascading events, please don’t delay—file now.

The legislation also extends the deadline for the federal government to pay victims’ flood insurance premiums to December 20, 2024. The National Flood Insurance Program is partnered with the HPCC Office and can provide up to 5 years of free insurance for those who weren’t required to carry flood insurance before the fire. We know how devastating the flooding after the fire was and how many families had never experienced flooding before. To see if you’re eligible for this free insurance, call the Claims Office helpline at (505)995-7133 or email [email protected].

Thanks to our work, families who experienced losses from the natural disaster and its aftermath will be able to receive much needed help. But we’re not done yet.

I'm still fighting to pass the full Hermit’s Peak Claims Extension Act. That bill would extend the Notice of Loss filing deadline and flood insurance payments to December 31, 2026, allow more time to undertake hazard mitigation projects, and provide funding to expand reforestation efforts to make sure everyone can get the help they need.
