“Hundreds of longshoremen picket at Port of Houston as strike begins,” Houston Chronicle's Erica Grieder — “A row of ship-to-shore cranes towered silently over Trinity Bay Tuesday morning, as seagulls cawed, passing trucks honked and members of International Longshoremen’s Association Local 24 chanted slogans and waved signs.
Several hundred dockworkers had hit the picket line at the Port of Houston's Bayport Container Terminal, gathering shortly after midnight. Similar actions were taking place at the Port of New York and New Jersey, the Port of Baltimore, and more than 30 other ports along the East and Gulf Coasts. The contract between the International Longshoremen’s Association and the United States Maritime Alliance, a group of carriers, employers and port associations, had expired at 12:00 AM, Eastern Time, at which point the ILA went on strike for the first time since 1977.
Although the ILA had asked union members not to speak to media, it had issued a statement for distribution.
"Due to corporate greed, employers refuse to compensate the ILA's members fairly," the statement said. "Over the last several years, the net revenues of these companies have grown astronomically from hundreds of millions to billions of dollar while the ILA members' wage increases do not even cover the cost of inflation."
Automation is, along with wages, the other key issue behind the strike. The ILA is seeking a ban on automated cranes, gates and container-moving trucks.
"Employers push automation under the guise of safety, but it is really about cutting labor costs to increase their already exceptionally high profits," the statement said.
The strike could cost the United States economy billions of dollars a day [ [link removed] ], according to experts, as well as disrupting the trucking industry, creating supply chain issues for manufacturers, and sending grocery prices back up even as progress has been made on inflation.
The signs at the picket—"ILA workers over machines"; "Fight automation. Save jobs"—reiterated the union's points. Several perched on a vintage Chevy sedan. Hundreds of metal containers were stacked in the yard, going nowhere, at least for today." Houston Chronicle [ [link removed] ] ($)
