Friend, our team just arrived in Asheville, North Carolina, and it’s difficult to put the magnitude of Hurricane Helene’s devastation here into words.
Floodwaters from Hurricane Helene wiped out roads and highways in western North Carolina.
The storm’s death toll is now reported at 130 people, and the tragic reality is that this number is still climbing. Hundreds of Asheville residents are unaccounted for, and their families’ desperation is growing by the minute. There is still limited power here – and cell phone service is almost impossible to find. Residents urgently need the most basic supplies.
Moments like these are what Americares was built for. I can tell you firsthand that our emergency teams are working quickly and efficiently to get medicines and relief supplies into the hands of those who need them most. We’re working to get health facilities operational again in the wake of severe flood damage. And we are prepared to provide mental health support to address the trauma and anxiety that survivors and first responders will undoubtedly face in the days, weeks and months ahead.
