In February, California resident Dr. Anna Nusslock was 15 weeks pregnant, bleeding, and in pain when she was given the devastating news that her twin babies wouldn’t survive. Grieving and terrified, she was told by her doctors that she needed an emergency abortion to protect her health and save her life, and she was also told that the hospital she was at, Providence St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka, wouldn’t allow her to receive the abortion care she needed.

Something so draconian, cruel, and unlawful should never happen — especially in a state like California with some of the strongest abortion rights protections in the country. My office is taking action so it never happens again:

Yesterday, I filed a lawsuit against Providence St. Joseph Hospital for breaking state law by denying an emergency abortion to Anna, whose life was threatened by a failed pregnancy. Anna should have never experienced this, and I’m doing everything in my power to prevent it from happening to anyone else.

This case goes to show that even in California, a state that prides itself on being a bastion of reproductive freedom, there are still serious challenges to our reproductive rights that must be addressed — I’m determined to do just that.
