This is so disappointing. Yesterday the Farm Bill expired , which leaves millions of Americans who rely on it to produce food, feed their families, and support rural development in a state of uncertainty. It’s also a huge setback in our efforts to get farmers resources and equipment they need to prevent fertilizer runoff from polluting streams, make their soils healthier, and even help curb climate change.

Now that Congress missed this crucial deadline, there’s going to be pressure to extend the Farm Bill for another year without making it stronger and better. Farmers have depended on the Farm Bill for nearly 100 years. But farming doesn’t look the same today as it did back in the 1930s, and the Farm Bill needs to keep up.

We need every member of Congress to hear from their constituents on this. Tell your lawmakers to support a pro-environment Farm Bill that meets the needs of our farmers, communities, and future generations: [link removed]

Agriculture accounts for a whopping 10% of the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions! Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is essential to our fight against climate change – and the changes we want to see in the Farm Bill would do exactly that.

There are funds available to farmers in Pennsylvania and across the country to help them farm sustainably. In 2023 alone, 30,000 acres of Pennsylvania farmland received $5.7 million in federal funding through the Inflation Reduction Act.

But if these funds aren’t written into the law, they could be stripped away by the next Congress or whoever becomes president.

Now that the Farm Bill has expired, we must act now to tell Congress to advance a Farm Bill that protects the interests of farmers, consumers, and our planet.
