Missouri Net News [link removed] Jump Start on Empowering Laity
Empowered laity are encouraged and equipped to develop and use their God-given gifts in the full life of the church. But how do we make this a reality? Join us for a Jump Start workshop on Oct. 23 where together we’ll consider questions around resourcing and developing lay leadership in the church. You’ll leave with practical advice and solutions that can be immediately implemented in your ministry context. Hurricane News from Around the Connection
From Lake Junaluska
Hurricane Helene caused significant flooding, damage and power outages throughout Western North Carolina including Lake Junaluska. The lake crested nearly five feet above normal causing minor flooding in the basement of the Harrell Center and Stuart Auditorium. Sections of the Rose Walk between the sidewalk and the lake were damaged. The Conference Center remains open and functioning with York Dining Commons serving as the command center for search and rescue units that have arrived to aid in the regional recovery process. Great progress has been made in cleaning the debris and repairing the minor damage. Lake Junaluska is still open for guests, and they have rooms available at a discounted rate for those affected by the hurricane. They do not have cell phone service at this time or internet service for guests, but The Terrace Hotel and Lambuth Inn do have power. They are trying to respond to the many questions and inquiries we are receiving as quickly as possible with a limited staff and limited communications system.
From Western North Carolina Conference
In a video message, Bishop Ken Carter of the Western North Carolina Conference talks about the response to Hurricane Helene. He said the conference is assembling cleaning buckets in collaboration with the United Methodist Committee on Relief and will be providing volunteer teams when the time is right.

From the Holston Conference
When Sharon Dowell saw the Facebook post from the principal of Tennessee High School, asking for select supplies to help flooded neighbors in nearby Elizabethton, she knew her church’s new baby ministry had to be involved. Elsewhere, church members are distributing cleaning buckets, hygiene kits and water. Over the weekend, Holston Conference disaster response distributed 1,600 cleaning kits to flooded communities in East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia and more are needed.
