John -
This afternoon at 3 pm, the Board of Supervisors will hold a special hearing I have called to address the ongoing crisis at the San Francisco Unified School District around Special Education funding, as well as the District's lack of transparency around planned school closures.
I hope you will tune in online here.
I called this special hearing to allow parents, teachers, and residents to hear firsthand about the ongoing issues facing our schools. As you may have heard, SFUSD has failed to allocate millions of dollars in Special Education resources, resulting in a staffing crisis which has left hundreds of our most vulnerable students–those with the greatest needs–without legally required staffing and support.
My hearing will also address the $8.4 million the City and County of San Francisco is providing for the School Stabilization Team, which was established to assist with the potential closures and mergers of schools in San Francisco. Because, at the same time, the District still hasn’t provided clarity or transparency around its plans for school closures, which disproportionately affect working-class families and communities of color. This lack of accountability is unacceptable.
I strongly urge you to watch the hearing or to join in person. Your voice and presence are crucial to ensuring the School District addresses these critical issues with the seriousness they demand.
Together, we will hold the District accountable for its decisions and lack of transparency which are harming our children and our community.
Thank you for your continued commitment to our students and our schools.
