The Trump administration just finalized its "public charge" rule, meant to strip immigrants of essential benefits such as health care and housing.

Today, the Trump administration officially published its “public charge” ([link removed]) rule change, a bald-faced attack on low-income immigrants that could strip millions of people and their families of critical support for shelter, food, and healthcare.

The rule will go into effect on October 15, 2019, and it’s absolutely essential that our communities seek out expert advice ([link removed]) if they think they will be affected by public charge.

If you or someone you know has questions about the rule or are concerned about enrollment in public safety-net programs like those providing food, housing or healthcare assistance, contact the Office for New Americans hotline at 1-800-566-7636 for additional information and resources. ([link removed]) You can also call Action NYC at 1-800-354-0365 to access city-funded, trusted legal advice.

Already, we’ve seen a spike in disenrollment from social benefits due to pervasive misinformation and fear. According to conservative estimates, public charge will impact 26 million people ([link removed]) nationwide. That includes the one-fourth of all children in the U.S. ([link removed]) — the vast majority born here — who live in immigrant families.

Please help us fight back against this administration's attacks on our communities by making a donation now. ([link removed])

It’s hard to overstate the consequences for New York, where the chilling effect of the rule would impact over 2 million people. As neighbors lose basics like food, medical care, and stable housing, every problem our state faces will worsen.

We must rise up together to stop Trump’s brutal attacks and build a country we can be proud of, one that welcomes all regardless of income or origin.

Join us in the fight ([link removed]) against this xenophobic rule which clearly favors the wealthy by supporting our ongoing efforts to stop Trump and his campaign of hate.

In solidarity,

Steve Choi
