Greetings, NPQ Leadership readers, and a happy fall to all! I’m pleased to bring you this newsletter tackling the evergreen topic of nonprofit executive pay. I’m also excited to announce a new little feature of the Leadership Newsletter, our Stat of the Week. Here it is:
Stat of the Week: $132,000
The average US nonprofit CEO salary as of 2022.
This number comes from the latest annual Nonprofit Compensation Report by Candid ([link removed]) , a comprehensive look at nonprofit executive pay ([link removed]) by geography, subsector, and many other metrics. Among the report’s findings: the notorious gender pay gap remains, with female CEOs earning 77 cents for every dollar earned by male CEOs.
Then, we delve in to the NPQ archives, where author Kori Kanayama argues that nonprofit staff wages are as important as CEO salaries ([link removed]) ; and NPQ Editor Emerita Ruth McCambridge makes the case that if the time comes to cut salaries, nonprofit CEOs should start with themselves ([link removed]) . Finally, we invite you to attend our upcoming Premium webinar: “Advanced QuickBooks for Nonprofits ([link removed]) .”
As always, the Leadership desk wants to hear from you. What would you like to see more—or less—of? Do you have questions you’d like us to tackle? Email Leadership Editor Isaiah Thompson at
