We are going to get through the coronavirus outbreak together. If you are experiencing symptoms or are looking for more information, you can visit the website of the CDC or the Illinois Department of Health. We are closely monitoring the situation and its effects on the people of Illinois and our nation as we work together to keep our families and communities safe.

John,

In 1862, the French army stormed La Puebla, Mexico in an attempt to conquer the nation. The Mexican army was vastly overpowered and outnumbered, and victory seemed impossible. But the Mexican army prevailed despite their unlikely chance of winning.

Cinco de Mayo is not about trivializing Mexican-American culture or celebrating Mexican Independence Day, it’s about emulating Mexico’s victory against all odds. It’s about not being afraid to stand up for your beliefs -- no matter how unlikely your chances of winning are.

I encourage you to join me in celebrating Cinco de Mayo by standing up for immigrants and volunteering for rights organizations such as United We Dream and Alianza Americas.

The Trump administration uses fear-mongering and xenophobia to belittle Mexican immigrants -- because they are afraid of our hard work and achievements. I became the first Mexican immigrant congressman from the midwest by standing up to the naysayers.

They know what we are capable of and how big of a cultural impact Mexicans have in the U.S.

But what the Trump administration fails to understand is that we didn’t cross the border. The border crossed us. Remember, today is about looking beyond fashion, food, and festivals, and representing our Mexican roots with honor and pride.

Join me in celebrating Cinco de Mayo respectfully and responsibly by proudly standing up for what we believe in, and showing this administration that we aren’t going anywhere.

¡Sí se puede!
