As we enter October, I am pleased to share many important opportunities to enrich our community and further our mission. We are proud to host several events, such as our October 9th event, Shaping the Next 25 Years of Women Peace and Security (WPS), and our October 28th book talk on Governing the Feminist Peace, as part of our ongoing effort to advance the WPS agenda.

EVENT: Book Talk - Governing the Feminist Peace | WIIS Global

Date: October 28, 4 pm ETSummary: The WPS agenda has advanced the integration of a gendered perspective and women's equal and meaningful participation in peace and security. And yet, its advancement has faced significant hurdles. The authors of this timely book, Paul Kirby and Laura J. Shepard, explore the implementation of WPS, the tensions within the agenda itself, and the contemporary dynamics of debate in this space. WIIS Global looks forward to welcoming these authors for a discussion of their book and invites you to join them!

Details: "Women for Security" is creating an information campaign about UNSCR 1325, the Women, Peace and Security agenda, adopted in 2000. The campaign's main aim is to inform others about the main objectives of the WPS agenda and its National Action Plans worldwide.

Date: September 25, 2024Summary: WIIS Global hosted a virtual networking hour exclusively for its members. During this event, the WIIS Global team led a discussion on gender equality in the workforce, and members had the opportunity to interact with each other and the WIIS Global team.

Meeting with Albanian First Lady | WIIS Latvia

Date: September 4, 2024Summary: Members of "Women for Security" met with Albanian First Lady Armanda Begaj, as a part of the official visit of Albanian President Bajram Begaj to Latvia. During the meeting, gender equality, inclusive society, and existing and possible cooperation between Latvia and Albania were discussed. Members of the organization shared their experiences and achievements within the organization, and their vision for the future.

Women, Peace and Security Agenda in Latvia’s Defense and Internal Affairs Sectors Seminar | WIIS Latvia

Date: September 11, 2024Summary: A seminar was organized to support the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security National Action Plan. The event was targeted at the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Interior, and Ministry of Defence personnel and included presentations, sessions, and practical elements by experts.

“Unstoppable” Movie Premiere | WIIS Latvia

Date: September 30, 2024Summary: A movie about women in the Latvian National Armed Forces premiered for the first time on September 30th.

Date: October 1, 2024Summary: WIIS Germany hosted a networking event to enhance the connection between women working in security. This event was held in collaboration with the network of women working in the German Ministry of Defence (Frauen@diplo) and the Women Diplomats Network in the EU (WEDIN EU) on the topic of "Women in Security." “Military Must Move Beyond Integration to Inclusion” | Article by WIIS Global Fellow Joan Johnson-Freese & Andrea N. Goldstein
