Report Details Myanmar’s Coup Impact on LGBTQ Organizing ([link removed])
[link removed]
Outright International’s newly launched report, "LGBTQ Anti-Coup Resistance in Myanmar," uncovers the impact of the 2021 military coup on LGBTQ individuals and organizations and documents their involvement in the resistance movement. It reveals personal accounts of LGBTQ people, pointing to how the coup affected them, their motivations for joining the resistance, and their roles in various movements since February 2021. As Aung Myo Min, NUG Minister of Human Rights, stated during Outright’s Asia Regional Forum: "...rainbow colors are visible in protests all over the country. LGBTQ people are learning self-defense and joining resistance groups... LGBTQ people who were seen as people with no place in society are now being recognized and supported as brave."

The report also addresses instances of conflict-related sexual and gender-based violence against LGBTQ individuals and offers recommendations for international stakeholders to support LGBTQ activists and groups in Myanmar. These findings were presented in a webinar hosted by Outright International on September 26th, 2024. The webinar featured prominent LGBTQ and feminist activists from Myanmar and sparked a dialogue on the complexities of the Myanmar crisis, the challenges faced by LGBTQ communities, and visions of accountability. UN LGBTI Core Group Convening Affirms Activists Amid Heightened Repression ([link removed])
[link removed]
Every year, the UN LGBTI Core Group holds a high-level meeting on the sidelines of the 79th UN General Assembly. This year, Ugandan human rights defender Gloriah Dhel and Filipina transfeminist activist Venus Aves addressed the audience. Gloriah Dhel highlighted the dire repercussions of the Anti-Homosexuality Act of 2023 in Uganda, while Venus illustrated the persistence of societal discrimination in the Philippines despite the absence of criminalization of LGBTIQ people. Their stories showed the shared struggles and resilience of LGBTIQ individuals around the globe, capturing the attention and support of UN member-states present at the event. Former Finland president Tarja Halonen and the United States First Lady Dr. Jill Biden were keynote speakers, emphasizing their commitment to supporting the rights of LGBTIQ individuals on a global scale. This article explores the evolving global political landscape and the implications for diverse identities, offering a thought-provoking exploration of the intersection of politics, human rights, and queer communities around the globe.
Advancing LGBTIQ Inclusion in Humanitarian Action ([link removed])
[link removed]
From September 11 to 13, 2024, Outright International led a Global Consultation on LGBTIQ Inclusion in Humanitarian Action hosted by Deutsche Bank in New York City. Activists from more than 15 countries and representatives from humanitarian organizations, policy experts, academics, corporate sector leaders, donors, and Outright staff gathered to collaborate. Our goal was to develop strategic advocacy approaches that ensure LGBTIQ needs are effectively addressed in humanitarian crises, regardless of the nature or location. Participants worked in groups to pinpoint barriers and solutions to inclusion to shape an activist-informed advocacy roadmap. Read the Humanitarian Crisis Report Here. ([link removed])
