Hi John,
This Wednesday, Tracy Murphy goes on trial in New York for providing care to two stray cows.
The two cows wandered onto her property, which happens to be a sanctuary for rescued farmed animals called Asha’s Farm Sanctuary, on July 16, 2022. *Tracy did what any compassionate person in her situation would have done: she gave the hungry cows food, water, and shelter.
*
But when a state trooper demanded she turn them over to him – without any proof of ownership – she refused. This was based in part on legal advice Tracy received. But while her attorney was discussing the question with the police, without any warning or discussion, the state trooper came back a few days later and arrested Tracy. She was taken to jail and had her hands and legs shackled in court. *Worst of all, the trooper seized the gentle and loving cows, whom Tracy had named Ismael and Little Willow, and sent them to slaughter.*
This is not the way our system should work.
Tracy is facing charges of petty larceny and up to one year in prison, while the company that lost track of the cows in the first place was allowed to take them back from the refuge they had found and kill them.
As animal advocates, we know that compassion is not a crime. And good people everywhere agree, including juries who have acquitted DxE animal rescuers ( [link removed] ) in Utah and California. But Tracy faces an uphill battle, because the animal ag community in her hometown has mobilized around a smear campaign to destroy Tracy’s reputation. She has received death threats and hate mail, and had angry protestors driving donuts on the road by her home.
Will compassion be able to prevail in this New York courthouse, despite the aggression in the community and the tragedy that has taken place? Follow the Asha Rescue Trial Twitter account ( [link removed] ) for updates from court. Pre-trial matters will be addressed in court tomorrow, and jury selection will begin on Thursday.
*We're asking that you make a post on your social media this Thursday, October 3rd to show your support for Tracy, the Right to Rescue, and Ismael and Little Willow, may they rest in peace.* Please use the hashtags #RightToRescue and #CompassionIsNotACrime.
Thank you,
Cassie
