The Livestrong Loop - September 2024

CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

As September, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, comes to a close, we want to share the stories of two young men who have overcome the odds.

After being diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma at 15, Ian Gilligan wasn't sure if he would be able to carry on with his passion of golf. Now a senior on the University of Florida Golf team, Ian inspires others on the course with not only his story of survivorship but also with his skill, now ranked #10 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and winning this summer's Western Amateur. "I know firsthand how challenging the fight against cancer can be. It's a battle that requires an army," Ian says. "That's why I've partnered with Livestrong - to help empower others facing this battle and shed light on the army that is Livestrong. Together, we can drive awareness, provide resources, and inspire hope for every affected by this horrible disease."

Tyler Neville was also 15 when he was diagnosed with lymphoma. Through treatment and recovery, he kept hope alive by continuing to play basketball and football. A Harvard grad, Tyler is an NFL prospect, now the starting tight end on the University of Virginia football team as a graduate student. "As someone who has been through the recovery process, I couldn’t think of a better use of my knowledge than to partner with Livestrong and use my experience to help others," Tyler says.

Fitness remains a crucial component of both Ian and Tyler's survivorship. To read more about the benefits of exercise for cancer survivors and learn how Livestrong can help, check out our CancerFit

FERTILITY & INSURANCE

18 U.S. states have passed insurance coverage laws for fertility preservation services, including New York. We teamed up with the Alliance for Fertility Preservation at their New York Policy Forum to discuss the law's effects and strategize on future improvements to enhance offerings for those with fertility challenges. The key takeaways:

• Livestrong Fertility enrollment in New York has decreased 52% in the past five years as a result of the fertility coverage law's enactment in 2020. We are thrilled that more people affected by cancer are getting the coverage they need, opening us up to provide services to others who need support.

• While the law has resulted in expanded access to fertility care for New Yorkers, those on Medicaid cannot benefit from it. In 2020, less than 1% of Livestrong Fertility clients in New York were uninsured. In 2023, that number was over 15%. Livestrong will continue to advocate for equitable access to fertility care for all cancer patients and survivors. Read More
