I always thought voter suppression was a Republican tactic, until New Jersey Democrats refused to make vote by mail universal in a pandemic.
Make no mistake—opposing vote by mail in these times is an act of voter suppression. The Russ For Us 2020 campaign wants to break the Democratic machine’s stranglehold on New Jersey and defeat these voter suppression tactics. This struggle in New Jersey has national consequences. | | Over 50 people contracted COVID-19 in Wisconsin’s primary, and by the same rate, New Jersey will see 1,000 new cases because of in-person voting. Despite this huge health risk, New Jersey has refused to make July’s primary election completely vote-by-mail.
The machine is scared of the biggest progressive wave in New Jersey’s history, and they’re making people choose between their health and their right to vote. That will mean historically low voter turnout—and a win for establishment politicians. These Democrats oppose 100% vote by mail because they're afraid of being replaced by better Democrats.
The good news is we’ve got a plan to empower voters despite the virus. It’ll mean making thousands of calls, distributing vote-by-mail applications to voters, and enfranchising thousands of marginalized New Jerseyans. Because we believe Democrats should always support democracy.
