Friend — We know your inbox is swamped today given tonight’s FEC deadline, but we wanted to send you something different than a fundraising email.
In fact, we wanted to make sure you saw the important legislation that Ed recently unveiled in the Senate.
Listen, we’ve all watched the rapid rise of AI technology like Chat GPT. We’ve all wondered what it means for our future. And we’ve already seen how AI can replicate and supercharge the bias and discrimination we see in daily life.
Ed’s Artificial Intelligence Civil Rights Act is a comprehensive AI civil rights bill which will put strict guardrails on companies’ use of algorithms for consequential decisions – such as when an algorithm determines whether a job applicant is hired or whether a family receives a mortgage. The AI Civil Rights Act will ensure algorithms are tested before and after deployment, help eliminate and prevent bias, and renew Americans’ faith in the accuracy and fairness of complex algorithms.
This legislation has endorsements from around the political spectrum, including organizations such as the NAACP, the ACLU, Free Press Action, Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE), the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, and many more.
The next step in getting this crucial bill passed? You.
As always, Ed is going to rely on this team and this movement to continue to put the pressure on Congress to pass this bill.
Because AI has so much promise, but poses so much danger too. That’s why it's always in the interest of us, the people, to hold Big Tech accountable and ensure that revolutionary technologies like AI benefit everybody and not just those at the top.
In solidarity,
Team Markey
