HOSTED A ROUNDTABLE WITH FEDERAL ORGANIZATIONS TO ADDRESS US TREASURY ISSUED CHECKS BEING STOLEN IN MAIL To tackle the issue of organized mail theft totaling $1 billion in check fraud across the country, I hosted a roundtable with representatives from the Bureau of Fiscal Service, the IRS, U.S. Postal Service, Office of Inspector General, and other Members of the House Ways and Means Committee to develop a strategy to address this ongoing issue that has led to $3.4 million in tax refunds, social security & veterans benefits being stolen in NY’s 11th district alone! HONORING THE HEROES AND VICTIMS OF THE SEPTEMBER 11TH ATTACKS This month, my heart is with our 9/11 first responders & families in New York City. From Washington, I took to the House floor to pay tribute to the 2,977 innocent victims who were killed by terrorists 23 years ago, as well as those who’ve succumbed to 9/11 related illness in the years since. We must Never Forget & we must ensure it NEVER happens again. I joined Reps. Josh Gottheimer, Mike Lawler, Marc Molinaro, Jared Moskowitz and families of 9/11 victims to ensure that the families and victims of state-sponsored terror are properly compensated with fines and forfeitures of state sponsors of terrorism. The King Street Sewer Project will bring much-needed relief to the residents of Annadale who have been all too familiar with the effects of severe flooding. LEARN MORE ANNOUNCING $500,000 FOR RICHMOND COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE I was proud to announce a $500,000 federal grant to the Richmond County District Attorney's Office (RCDA) which will enable the DA’s Office to establish a Cold Case Unit, and dedicate more time to investigating violent cold cases that have suspect DNA profiles. LEARN MORE GROUNDBREAKING OF THE STAPLETON NORTHERN INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT My office joined the New York City Economic Development Corporation along with Staten Island Borough President Vito J. Fossella and Councilwoman Kamillah Hanks for the groundbreaking of the Stapleton Waterfront Northern Infrastructure Project. This is the first phase of a mixed-use residential community with a public school, open space & commercial businesses. For a long time, we’ve said our waterfront has potential & we will soon see it take shape. LEARN MORE NATIONAL POW/MIA RECOGNITION DAY READ MORE This month I joined the Vietnam Veterans of America at their POW-MIA Remembrance Ceremony in Castleton Corners. On the House floor, I recognized U.S. Army Air Force's 2nd Lt. Francis E. Callahan of New Brighton, Staten Island whose remains were recently identified after 80 years by the Department of Defense POW-MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA). As a nation grateful to those who served and made the ultimate sacrifice, we must continue raising awareness of this issue and work toward the repatriation of all our POW/MIA to bring closure to their families and communities.  As the POW-MIA flag states, these heroes are not forgotten, and we will do everything we can to honor their memory and bring them home. LAUNCH OF THE STATEN ISLAND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH BLUEPRINT   My Office joined Staten Island Borough President Vito J. Fossella for the launch of the SI Behavioral Health Blueprint. Our community will benefit from the proactive mental health services this grant will provide, including clinical intervention and suicide prevention efforts. This is made possible by a 5-year, $3.67 million federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration grant I helped deliver. Those in need and our entire community will greatly benefit from these efforts.   LEARN MORE   HOSTED ROUNDTABLE WITH LOCAL PHARMACIES I hosted a roundtable in Staten Island to discuss the pharmaceutical field and curbing the cost of prescription medications. Predatory pharmaceutical benefit managers (PBM) overcharge insurers & pocket the profits instead of passing savings on to patients. It’s the #1 reason medicines cost so much & 30% of Americans skip dosages. PBMs must be reigned in & my bills would do that. Nicole Malliotakis accuses NYPD, Mayor Adams of 'stonewalling' request for NYC migrant crime number READ MORE STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Richmond County District Attorney’s Office was awarded a $500,000 federal grant to establish a cold case unit on the borough. The grant will supply the office with the funding needed to establish the unit and dedicate more time to investigating violent cold cases that already have suspect DNA profiles. The money was administered through the Bureau of Justice Assistance and awarded under the FY24 Prosecuting Cold Cases Using DNA grant program. The funding was announced Thursday in a press release by Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-Staten Island/South Brooklyn) and District Attorney Michael E. McMahon. The money will help the office close an estimated 100 violent crime cold cases where DNA forensic evidence exists, the release states. “DNA analysis is a powerful tool that enables law enforcement to catch and prosecute violent perpetrators, especially in long-unsolved cold cases where crucial evidence has been awaiting testing,” said Malliotakis. “I am proud to have supported District Attorney McMahon in pursuit of this grant and happy it was awarded.” IVF treatments could be covered by health insurance if this legislation is passed Bipartisan legislation that would require infertility treatments, like in vitro fertilization, to be covered by private insurance has the support of Staten Island’s congresswoman. READ MORE VA halts cat and dog research, a win for animal advocates After years of persistent advocacy from Congress, organizations and animal lovers across the country, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) just confirmed, “We are no longer conducting any feline testing and are now bringing an end to animal research on sensitive species,” meaning cats, dogs, and non-human primates. This marks a significant victory for all who have tirelessly campaigned to end cruel and outdated government-funded animal experiments. However, this change did not occur overnight. The VA’s involvement in painful and lethal experiments on cats and dogs dates back to at least the 1950s, an era characterized by practices such as lobotomies, widespread endorsement of cigarette smoking by doctors, and the use of X-rays in shoe stores. Although science has evolved considerably since then, some of the VA’s research practices remained stubbornly entrenched in the past.
