I've spent five decades making films that tell the stories of America’s greatest challenges — from the Civil War to the Dust Bowl, from the Second World War to the Vietnam War. In each of these historic moments, we were challenged to live up to the essential promise of our nation: preserving a democratic system of government that respects the rights and addresses the needs of all its citizens. Today, challenges to our republic are rampant once again. The democratic values that make up the very fabric of our nation are under assault and at risk of unraveling. It’s never been more important to safeguard our fragile democracy: as Benjamin Franklin so wisely put it, "A Republic, if you can keep it." But this election is not just about keeping Donald Trump out. It's about coming together to protect our shared American values and restoring integrity to our government. That's why electing leaders to the Senate that we can be proud of is so important – and why we have to help Elissa Slotkin hold Michigan's Senate seat for Democrats this fall. There is also a personal connection in this race for me. Like Elissa, I grew up in Michigan. And she’s a student of history, which I so appreciate in an elected official. I'd really like to make sure she wins her Senate race this November. So I am asking: Democrats cannot keep control of the Senate if they lose in Michigan. Thank you for helping Elissa with your donation today. Ken Burns ![]()
