John,
FIRST: Arizona passed a law requiring counties to wholly reject state voter registration forms that are not accompanied by the voter’s documentary proof of citizenship, even where that voter has already attested to citizenship as part of registration requirements.
THEN: Free Speech For People joined the Campaign Legal Center in a lawsuit challenging the law in 2022, arguing that it placed an undue burden on Latino citizens registering to vote in violation of the Voting Rights Act. The U.S. District Court of Arizona later struck down this provision.
NOW: The Supreme Court has stayed the district court’s decision less than two months before the 2024 general election, leaving tens of thousands of Arizona voters potentially unable to cast their ballots.
Before we explain, can you rush a donation to help us fight voter suppression in Arizona and beyond? [[link removed]]
Too many Arizona voters—particularly voters of color—already face significant barriers to voting. Voters are already required to attest to their citizenship—under penalty of perjury—to register to vote, and federal law prohibits states from imposing additional paperwork requirements to register for federal elections.
Free Speech For People, along with our partners at Campaign Legal Center and other organizations, will continue our fight to defend Arizona voters as we face one of the most critical elections in recent history. But we can’t do that without your help.
Will you chip in what you can today to help us continue our fight against voter suppression? [[link removed]]
Thank you for all you do.
In solidarity,
Courtney Hostetler
