79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) – High-level week
Pact for the Future: Heads of State and Government gathered at UN Headquarters in New York on 22-23 September 2024 at the Summit of the Future to address critical challenges and gaps in global governance exposed by recent global shocks. The Summit reaffirmed commitments to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the United Nations Charter, enhanced cooperation, and laid the foundations for a reinvigorated multilateral system, resulting in a negotiated Pact for the Future, an action-oriented document aimed at bolstering global cooperation and adapting to current challenges for the benefit of all and future generations. Proven Solutions for Children: On the sidelines of UNGA, government leaders, high-level guests, and UN Representatives joined UNICEF, the African Union, and the European Union for a high-level dialogue on proven policy solutions for children, including child benefits. At the event, UNICEF released Proven Solutions for Children, which examines four evidence-based and cost-effective priority policy solutions aimed at accelerating progress toward the UN Sustainable Development Goals. G20’s pledge for change: Tackling child poverty, hunger, and inequality
The G20 Ministerial Development Meeting and the pre-launch of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty were held in July, alongside other high-level G20 meetings. Under the Brazilian Presidency, the G20 Development Working Group ratified a Ministerial Declaration focusing on two urgent and critical areas: reducing inequities and enhancing drinking water and sanitation services. The Declaration acknowledges that children are disproportionately impacted by poverty and inequality and underscores the pressing need to intensify efforts to advance gender equality and empower women and girls. A new Global Alliance on Hunger and Poverty has been proposed as an essential mechanism to eradicate hunger and poverty. The Alliance aims to eliminate poverty by addressing the social protection coverage and financing gap and expanding policies and programmes to prevent malnutrition. Read more.
