PHOENIX — Cisco is partnering with the State of Arizona to expand WiFi internet access to high-need communities across the state. Working with the Arizona State Library, Cisco will install new external wireless access points at local libraries, allowing students conducting distance learning and others to access WiFi from outside the building.
“Access to reliable internet is crucial for our rural areas and communities in need,” said Governor Ducey. “Expanding WiFi access will enable more students to take part in distance learning and facilitate access to resources for those without reliable internet at home. I’m grateful to the team at Cisco for helping more Arizonans stay connected during COVID-19.”
“It’s our responsibility as business leaders and policymakers to step up and help create inclusive futures for our communities that are now at greater risk of being left behind by the digital divide,” said Nick Michaelides, Senior Vice President, US Public Sector at Cisco. “Achieving ubiquitous internet takes a village; we’re proud of this important initiative with Arizona state leadership that will provide internet access to rural Arizonans in a time of seemingly essential need.”
The libraries benefitting from the Cisco donation include:
-
Huachuca City Public Library in Cochise County
-
Coolidge Public Library in Pinal County
-
Duncan Public Library in Greenlee County
-
Tolleson Public Library in Maricopa County
-
Mission Public Library in Pima County
“By providing public internet access, computers, online resources, and digital skills training, libraries ensure that all Arizonans can meet their needs in today's online world,” said Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs. “These additional access points will help rural libraries extend connectivity options to those affected by the digital divide.”
The donation is funded through Cisco’s Country Digital Acceleration (CDA) Program, which has active national and state level initiatives in 34 countries, and is providing frontline relief and critical support to digital infrastructure during the COVID-19 global pandemic. ConvergeOne, an IT value-added reseller and Cisco partner, will be providing setup and implementation support for this initiative.
In addition to this effort to provide connectivity for distance learning, the Arizona Commerce Authority and the Arizona Department of Education are collecting donated hotspots to provide students without home internet the access they need. To date, 200 hotspots have been distributed to students of:
-
Bisbee Unified School District
-
Mohawk Valley Elementary School District
-
Ash Fork School District
-
Paloma Elementary School District
-
Bicentennial High School District
