Friend,
I remember it vividly. I was on assignment with Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in a country where abortion is restricted, when a woman came in bleeding heavily with a life-threatening pregnancy complication.
My team gathered to discuss the best way to help our patient. In order to save her life, we needed to help her end the pregnancy safely. Not everyone on the team agreed with abortion. Still, despite our different values and convictions, we were united by a fundamental truth: We were all there to save this patient’s life and limit her suffering. We were able to provide a safe abortion, and as a result, this woman survived. Her family was so grateful that she survived and was safe because of this high-quality, lifesaving treatment.
Safe abortion care is essential health care.
In honor of Safe Abortion Day, please make a gift that supports safe abortion care, maternal care, and other critical lifesaving medical care in more than 70 countries around the world.

I’ve completed six surgical assignments with MSF in Sierra Leone, Lebanon, Ivory Coast, and Iraq. One thing has continued to consistently ring true: No matter where they live, people who are denied access to safe abortion care are at greater risk for complications than those who can access safe care.
In 2023 alone, MSF provided over 54,000 consultations for safe abortion care, the majority in African countries, along with 31,000 consultations for post-abortion care, most taking place in Afghanistan, Yemen, South Sudan, and Bangladesh. Yet millions more people around the world still lack access to this essential lifesaving care.
Restricting access to safe abortion only harms the health and well-being of the people who desperately need it. When abortion is illegal and restricted, all aspects of sexual, reproductive, and maternal health are affected.
