Here at the National Institute for Reproductive Health Action Fund, we believe the government’s role in our health care is to protect it, make it affordable, and ensure it is accessible.
That’s why we’re writing to you on this anniversary of the Hyde Amendment — a piece of legislation passed just a few short years after Roe v. Wade that bans the use of federal funds for abortion care. This amendment means that folks who utilize government insurance programs, like Medicaid, face even more barriers to abortion care. It is a racist and discriminatory legacy in our federal policy that harms women, people of color, and people with low-incomes who disproportionately rely on public programs because of the inequitable systems in our country.
In Colorado, there’s an exciting effort to remove this barrier.
Proposition 89, on Colorado’s ballot this November, would protect abortion coverage, regardless of someone’s insurance.
