A few years ago, a writer told me Texas had replaced California as a bellwether for the country. “As Texas goes, so goes the nation,” he explained. As a Texan, that's music to my ears. But as much as we like to believe such things, some of our picks this week suggest something slightly to the contrary. From criminal justice to economics , it's hard to ignore the idea that the rest of the nation is having at least as large an impact on the Texas experience as we are having on the rest of the nation.
